Richard L. Tousignant '86 has established a scholarship fund to encourage talented students at William Mitchell.

"The clinics in which I was involved during law school taught me how to litigate and the law school gave me the degree to do it. If you were to ask me, I'd say William Mitchell gave me everything I have today." - Richard L. Tousignant ‘86

Richard L. Tousignant ‘86 has established himself as one of the best trial lawyers in the state. Throughout his time at William Mitchell College of Law, a predecessor school of Mitchell Hamline, Richard worked as a full-time private investigator. After graduating with honors, Richard immediately joined the law firm of Schwebel Goetz & Sieben.

Richard has represented and fought for thousands of clients in a variety of personal injury cases and realizes the important role Mitchell Hamline played in helping him become a successful trial lawyer.

Richard understands the issues accident victims face physically, emotionally, and economically. He understands the important role litigators play in helping victims begin to recover.

He and his wife, Inez, established the Richard L. and Inez Tousignant Scholarship to support Mitchell Hamline students who, like himself, exhibit a strong interest and talent for a legal career in litigation.

Richard is funding his scholarship in two ways:

  • First, he is making annual gifts to Mitchell Hamline, which are awarded each year to the recipient of the scholarship;
  • Second, he has provided for Mitchell Hamline in his estate plan. In the future, his estate gift will fund his scholarship for years to come.

Richard is enjoying immediate tax benefits from his outright gifts. In the future, his estate will also realize tax benefits because of his legacy gift to Mitchell Hamline.
